The most common principles of home organization are—getting rid of clutter, grouping similar things, keeping things handy, creating the space you want, and finding appropriate containers.

  1. 1.Do Away with Clutter

    Being organized helps increase efficiency and this in turn has a positive impact on productivity.

    The first step of home organization is to dispose of things that you do not need. There may be a lot of things that you are loathe to get rid of. So, ask yourself how often it is that you use that particular item, and try to recall when you used it last? If your answer to both questions is that you do not remember, then it is time to throw it away. The basic rule is if something has not been used for two years or more, then it has outlived its utility value. If that particular item is a useful one that someone else might benefit from, then you could donate it to someone you know or to a charity organization


    Why would want something sitting around collecting dust anyhow? That could lead to increased allergies and contagious particles lying around you.

  2. 2.Removing Spots and Stains

    About two tablespoons of powdered citric acid can be put into the detergent cup and the dishwasher be allowed to run one full cycle. This will help to remove any rust spots that may have cropped up. If the spots are very stubborn, then this process may have to be repeated yet again. If there is a buildup of minerals or stains, a similar process has to be followed with the citric acid being replaced by vinegar. One or two cups of vinegar will have to be used for the purpose. Another option is to keep a bowl with about three cups of vinegar on the bottom rack of the dishwasher while it is empty.

  3. 3.Grouping Together Like Things

    Once all the unwanted things have been removed, sort through what is left and group them together. This will help you find them when you most need them. For instance, stationery items such as envelopes, stamps, pens, and glue should all be kept in the same place so you don’t have to look for each one when you need it. There can be a few exceptions to this rule. They include items like scissors because most of us like to use a different pair for each purpose. So, the scissors used when sewing will stay in the sewing box while the ones used for gardening will be placed with the gardening tools.

  4. 4.Keep Things Handy

    You should keep all the items in your house in places where you need them. The best place to store personal care items such as hair dryers, gels, and other similar products would be the bathroom cabinet or in your dressing room. Similarly, the home office should be where you keep your printer and accessories like printing paper and ink. Doing this will ensure that all the items are within reach any time you need them.

  5. 5.Create the Required Space

    If you feel you lack the required space to store your stuff, you can try to create more room for your stuff within your existing home. If you do not have a place to store your linens, then you can free some space in one of the existing closets or cabinets to keep these. Else, if you have a staircase inside your home, you could use the space underneath it to create a small wardrobe or closet exclusively for your linens.

  6. 6.Get the Right Containers

    Clear, plastic containers are a good choice for storing items because with one glimpse you can see what they hold. It saves you the time and energy required to sift through boxes of stuff to find the one item you need. Garments and shoes can also be stored in clear plastic garment and shoe bags which will help protect them from dirt and dust besides making them easily accessible. Carousel shelves are a great boon in the kitchen and the study making it easy to reach books and dishes with ease.
