Basic Driveway Repair Guide

Your driveway may be one of the first things people see when they arrive at your home. It’s important to keep your driveway maintained and in good repair for several reasons. Not only does your driveway contribute to the overall appearance of your home, but it would also be an expensive project to replace it.

Whether you’re maintaining your driveway or replacing it, our driveway guide will give you everything you need to know to keep a driveway in superior condition.

  1. 1.Blacktop Driveway Repair

It’s a good idea to apply fresh sealcoating to the entire blacktop driveway about every three to four years to maintain your driveway.

A basic blacktop driveway may be the most common driveway style – usually because they’re inexpensive and it’s possible to perform some repairs yourself. If you notice small cracks forming in a blacktop driveway, take a close look at them before they get any larger. As long as these are just one or two lines and not a large, interconnected web of cracks, you can probably fix the cracks yourself. Buy some liquid crack sealer from the hardware store, clean out the cracks and fill them with the sealer.

It’s a good idea to apply fresh sealcoating to the entire blacktop driveway about every three to four years to maintain your driveway. While this isn’t a pleasant chore, it’s totally doable for most homeowners. You could also pay a company to reseal it for you.

  2. 2.Concrete Driveway Repair

Just behind blacktop driveways in popularity, concrete driveways are also popular because of their low maintenance. If you notice small cracks appearing, use a rubberized crack sealant to fill the cracks. For larger cracks, it will be necessary to remove the cracked section and replace it professionally.

Concrete driveways also need sealing, about every four to five years, to keep them in good condition.

  3. 3.Gravel Driveway Repair

If you’re on a budget, a gravel driveway may fit your pocketbook. You don’t need to pay an expert to install a gravel driveway -- this is a doable home improvement project for the average homeowner. You will need to make sure that you apply the gravel at the proper depth and that you use the correct materials for optimal driveway appearance and performance.

You could even choose designer gravel colors to give your driveway a blast of color – coordinate it with your house colors for a pulled-together landscape.

Gravel driveway maintenance is no more difficult than adding additional gravel from time to time to keep the depth of gravel at the proper level.

  5. 4.Brick Driveway Repair

When you have the budget for it, a brick driveway can provide a high-quality appearance to any outdoor landscape. Even if you possess solid home-improvement skills, this is probably one job that is best left for the experts to make sure your driveway goes in flawlessly.

Advantages of a brick driveway include the easy maintenance, the variety of brick colors available and the ease with which you will walk and drive on the surface.
