Here is a group of four tips we have found to help your energy output at different times in the year. Keep in mind that your house is constantly working to keep you comfortable, so you should lessen the amount of work it has to do in order to maintain efficiency.

 
  1. 1.Winter

    Use a microwave or toaster oven compared to a conventional oven and you will find that it uses only half of the usual energy.

    Watch your thermostat. If you turn down your thermostat to around seventy degrees, you will find that you can save almost ten percent on your total energy costs. Keep in mind that with each degree you lower your thermostat in the winter; you can save about three percent in energy output.

     

    Use weather stripping for windows when possible. This will help to insulate your house and keep warm air inside while keeping cool air out. Caulking can help as well and will come especially in handy for those homes that are bothered by more snow-ridden winters.

     

    Change your heating filters once a month. Although inconvenient, this will help to keep your house warm all while making your actual furnace work less. A dirty filter will not only make the air less pure, but it makes your furnace use more energy to try and pump out the warmer air.

  2. 2.Summer

    Central air conditioning units tend to account for thirty percent of your overall energy output. Air filters must be maintained and cleaned properly to ensure that you are not losing money and energy. A dirty air filter will take more energy to cool the home compared to a newer and cleaner one.

     

    Try and keep your thermostat at about seventy six degrees in the summer. Although it may not be quite as cool as you’d like, you can save money just by raising your thermostat one degree. A one degree difference saves you about five percent on your electric bill.

     

    Also, try to keep furniture, lamps and any other heat source away from air conditioning vents when possible. Heat from any of these sources will keep your air conditioning running longer than it needs to, which in turn will hike up your energy bill.

  3. 3.Spring and Fall

    As a regular part of spring cleaning, you should always thoroughly inspect all fans in your household to make sure that they are working correctly. Also, take a dust rag and make to clean off each blade on the fan. This will not only help you breathe better, but it will help to keep the entire atmosphere cleaner as well.

     

    For Fall, check your insulation for any possible gaps or damage. Insulation is very important in the winter when heat is crucial. Take the extra time to inspect your attic and make sure that all insulation is working efficiently.

  4. 4.Year Round

    Use a microwave or toaster oven compared to a conventional oven and you will find that it uses only half of the usual energy. Microwave ovens also produce less heat than ovens which will help save on air conditioning in the summer.

     

    When drying laundry, put a dry towel in with your wet clothes to help absorb wetness and lessen the amount of work that your dryer needs to do. This will also shorten drying time, which again, conserves energy and money.

     

    Check out your crawlspace to make sure the insulation is regular and dry. Wet insulation can cause a load of problems, but energy wise it can make temperatures irregular and harder to control.
