Yard Spring Cleaning Guide

Once winter loses its grasp, it’s time to turn thoughts to outdoor landscaping to clean and spruce up your outdoor areas. Over the winter months while the growing season pauses, a landscape often accumulates debris and dead growth that you must clear out before the new growing season begins. With attention to detail, you can restore the beauty of your yard and enable plants to grow again.

With a yard spring grooming guide, you can spruce up your yard to prepare it for the upcoming growing season.

  1. Prune plants in the spring if they require shaping or cleaning out. Be careful not to disrupt a blooming schedule on the plants you prune.

    1.Importance of Spring Clean-up

The precipitation that falls during the winter when plants are not actively growing often contributes to an untidy situation in a landscape. Whether you receive snow or rain, the accumulation of precipitation and debris makes a mess in most landscapes.

As plants begin to grow again in the spring, you must remove old debris from planting areas. This debris could lead to disease and it can also interfere with new plant growth if left in place.

  2. 2.How to Clean Up Your Landscape

Get out the rakes and clean out all planting beds to remove leaves and other debris. As you rake, take care not to disturb the new growth that should be appearing. If necessary, remove debris by hand to protect tender growth.

Cut back any plant growth that you left standing in the fall to remove the old growth.

Prune plants in the spring if they require shaping or cleaning out. Be careful not to disrupt a blooming schedule on the plants you prune. Wait to prune plants that blossom in the early spring until after they bloom to avoid cutting off blossoms. Prune other plants that bloom on new growth in the spring before the new growth begins.

Watch for insects that will appear as the weather begins to warm. If you find slugs or other pests, treat your garden for them quickly to avoid an infestation during the growing season.

Work the soil of your growing areas if you will be planting. Over the winter, this soil generally compacts down with the colder weather. Use a spade or a rototiller to turn the soil over and separate it. After you till the soil, you will be ready to place new plants in the ground.

  3.
  4. 3.Preventing Grooming Issues

An ignored landscape will not thrive and stay healthy. You may notice an increase in disease among your plants and plants may not grow as vibrantly as they otherwise would grow. Leaving debris on the soil around plants can contribute to fungal and bacterial infections, which can affect the health of plants.

Trees and shrubs that do not receive regular pruning will become overgrown, unattractive and unhealthy. Remove the old, dead growth from trees and shrubs at least once each year to keep them healthy.
